IJED- Editorial Focus

Welcome to the sixth issue of ICFAI journal of Entrepreneurship Development. In this issue we bring to you a few carefully chosen articles, to deepen our insight into the entrepreneurial process. Even though all articles, except one, and the case study in this issue are of foreign origin, we believe that entrepreneurial traits and processes are mostly country-neutral except to the extent that the larger socio-economic environment has an impact on start-ups and their success. We also believe that India will provide a lot of interesting entrepreneurial insights to the audience all over the world and would like to solicit original articles from Indian academicians, scholars and entrepreneurs. The lack of entrepreneurial literature from India is curious considering that India is among the top in "Total Entrepreneurial Activity" as measured by the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor study. However, a beginning has been made and I am sure that in future, India will make up its lack of entrepreneurial literature.

The first article from Dr. Nagayya, "Perspectives of Entrepreneurship Development – Role of STEPs and Innovation and Business Incubators", reviews two programs initiated by the Govt. of India to encourage entrepreneurship in the country. In the eighties, the govt. conceptualised a program involving the leading financial institutions and Universities to pool their resources to create an "eco-system" for entrepreneurs in the country. The efforts have borne fruit as shown by the numbers reviewed by the author. He also traces the efforts made by some individual universities to further the cause of entrepreneurship.

The second article examines the use of a number of bootstrap financing options by the small technology-based firms. The author, Howard Van Auken, surveyed 44 companies to explore their preference for choosing the type of bootstrap financing from among 28 varieties. Interestingly, not one company in the survey used shared office space, which may be understandable but indicates a potential worth promoting.

The third article, "Entrepreneurial Capital: A Resource-Based Conceptualisation of the Entrepreneurial Process" by Patrick Firkin seeks to detail the concept of entrepreneurial capital. As a single article, it may appear long to some readers, but the author has included four cases to highlight the contrasts in entrepreneurial capital that makes this article specially enriching and an interesting read.

The case study on Isaac Tigrett in this issue is also interesting considering that Mr. Tigrett went through very trying times during his development years, yet managed to make it on his own even when the rest of his family broke under pressure. These childhood experiences had a profound effect on Mr. Tigrett and he developed a unique leadership style.
